What Everscope does

Everscope inventories Power BI and Fabric metadata, evaluates deterministic rules and turns the results into governed actions. It combines technical analysis, ownership, policies, KPI lineage and evidence without reading business-data rows.

Your first successful scan

Connect with Microsoft, start with the metadata-only scan, review coverage and then assign workspace domains and owners. Use the full scan only when deeper tenant metadata has been approved.

Governance

Why BI governance matters

BI decisions influence finance, operations and customers. Governance makes definitions, ownership, access, quality and change decisions explicit—so teams can move faster without relying on tribal knowledge.

Governance

Owner, technical owner and steward

The business owner is accountable for value and correct use. The technical owner is responsible for reliable implementation. The data steward maintains definitions, classification and governance quality.

Domains and workspace inheritance

Fabric items inherit governance from their workspace. Assigning a domain and accountable owners once keeps hundreds of items manageable and creates a safe access boundary for domain roles.

Findings

How to assess a finding

Read the rule, evidence and affected object. Check usage, dependencies and business context. Then choose fix, accept, defer or false positive, add an owner and due date, and record validation evidence.

Unused does not mean safe to delete

Usage windows and metadata are decision support, not deletion approval. Confirm external dependencies, embedded usage, exports, subscriptions and business cycles before removing any object.

Security

Metadata-only processing

Everscope stores definitions, inventory, scan results, aggregated usage and governance workflow. It does not retrieve or store the underlying rows from semantic models and does not perform automatic remediation.

Least-privilege permissions

Standard delegated permissions read the workspaces and assets the signed-in user can access. Tenant-wide Scanner API coverage is optional and needs administrator approval. Write permissions are not required for analysis.

Operations

Exports and the data API

Authorised roles can export KPIs, findings, assets, Fabric inventory, actions and controls to XLSX, CSV or SQL. Read-only API keys support governed downstream integrations and can expire or be revoked.

Schedules, evidence and exceptions

Schedule recurring scans, assess policies, request attestations and record temporary exceptions with an owner, expiry and compensating control. All changes remain traceable.

KPI governance

From objective to report

The KPI map links strategic objectives to KPIs, drivers, governed measures, semantic models and reports. Definitions, thresholds, cadence, ownership and approval stay together.

Accountability

Who does what in BI governance?

Clear roles reduce meetings and prevent important work from becoming “the BI team's problem”.

Accountable

Business owner

Owns business value, approved use, definitions and risk acceptance.

Responsible

Technical owner

Keeps implementation, refresh, performance and support reliable.

Quality guardian

Data steward

Maintains descriptions, classification, lineage and evidence quality.

Decision maker

Domain owner

Prioritises governance across a business domain and approves remediation.

Control operator

Governance admin

Configures policies, reviews evidence and oversees the governance programme.

Independent reader

Auditor

Reviews immutable evidence, decisions, exceptions and the audit trail.

Security & permissions

Start with less access. Expand only when the value is clear.

The standard connection follows the signed-in user's existing Microsoft access. A tenant administrator only needs to approve broader coverage when the organisation wants a complete tenant inventory.

A rhythm people can run

The practical governance operating model.

Governance works when it becomes a small, repeatable system—not a once-a-year cleanup project.

Product & scanning

What can Everscope scan?+

Workspaces, semantic models, reports and the broader Microsoft Fabric item inventory. Full scans can also collect model objects, references, report definitions, refresh history, activity and capacity metadata when the tenant allows it.

Does Everscope support Excel?+

Excel files connected to or exported from Power BI may appear through related metadata or usage, but Everscope does not scan arbitrary Excel workbooks stored outside the Power BI and Fabric estate.

How often should we scan?+

Weekly is a practical default for active estates. Critical domains may scan daily; stable environments can use a monthly cadence. Match the frequency to change rate and governance workload.

Why can scan coverage differ?+

Microsoft licences, tenant settings, capacity type, API permissions and rate limits determine which metadata is available. Everscope records coverage so missing evidence is visible.

Permissions & security

Do we need Tenant.Read.All?+

No for the standard user-scoped experience. It is only needed when an administrator wants tenant-wide coverage through administrative APIs.

Can Everscope work with read-only permissions?+

Yes. Analysis is designed around read access. Everscope does not need permission to change or delete your Power BI and Fabric content.

Who can see governance data?+

Tenant roles control capabilities. Domain owners and stewards are restricted to explicitly assigned domains; viewers cannot change governance metadata; auditors receive read-only evidence access.

Where is data processed?+

The production environment is configured for Fly.io in Amsterdam and an EU-region database. Review contractual and subprocessor details as part of your organisation's procurement process.

Governance practice

What should every governed asset contain?+

At minimum: domain, business owner and technical owner. Add a steward, criticality, classification, support group, SLA and certification when the asset's importance requires it.

Do we fill governance for every Fabric item?+

No. Fabric items inherit accountability from their workspace. Models and reports can still have their own profile when more specific ownership is needed.

What is the difference between an exception and acceptance?+

Acceptance is a finding-level decision about a known risk. A policy exception is formal, time-bound and includes an accountable owner, expiry date and compensating control.

Where can we retrieve all results?+

The Overview prioritises the estate, Findings contains technical evidence, asset pages show context, Governance holds controls, and exports or the read-only API provide a complete external dataset.
